JaCVAM = Japanese Center for the Validation of Alternative Methods

Message from JaCVAM

The Japanese Center for the Validation of Alternative Methods (JaCVAM) has now entered its 13th year, and in April welcomed Dr. Yoko Hirabayashi as the third director of the Biological Safety Research Center (BSRC) at the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS). With the addition to our staff last August of Dr. Takao Ashikaga, formerly of Shiseido Company, Limited, we are more capable than ever of undertaking the wide variety of activities necessary to promote the use of alternative methods to animal testing as well as to gain regulatory acceptance for new test methods in Japan.
During the twelve years since the establishment of JaCVAM, we have coordinated numerous activities with the OECD, the ICH, and other international organizations, including the organization of validation studies to secure the adoption of more than 10 different new test methods proposed by Japanese developers as well as the preparation of documentation necessary to the acceptance of numerous others. We are proud of our achievements, which have effectively resulted in acceptance by the international community of one test method a year from Japan. We have also proposed for regulatory use in Japan more than thirty different tests developed by researchers from Japan and around the world. Documentation created by JaCVAM is used in the preparation of guidance on alternative methods for quasi-drugs as well as in establishing criteria for poisonous and deleterious substances, which is an important aspect of promoting the international use of alternative methods to animal testing.
None of this could have been possible without the efforts of numerous professionals who have honored us with their help by participating in the JaCVAM Advisory Council and Regulatory Acceptance Board as well as in our various editorial committees, validation study management teams, and peer review panels.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to our activities in the past and reiterate how much we appreciate your continued cooperation and support.

Hajime Kojima, secretary-general
